Why a Church Bookshop?
The mission of Bethel Books is to get good Christian books into the hands of God's people, in the Potteries and beyond. Christianity and reading have historically gone hand-in-hand, and if Christians are to read, then we need to be able to get good books for reasonable prices. For this reason, we have had a bookshop ministry since before the present building opened in 1977, and the current building has a dedicated bookshop space. Since 2014 this has been run by Gareth Phillips, our Bookshop Manager. We have a large stock of both new and secondhand Christian books, and if you want something particular, we can usually order it in. As well as books we stock a wide selection of cards for all occasions, and a small selection of gifts such as bookmarks, pens, and Scripture texts.
Bethel Books is a ministry of Bethel Church, and that means that unlike many bookshops, we are not motivated by a need to make money, but to serve God's people. This also means that we don't just stock everything that claims to be Christian, our stock is carefully managed to maintain Biblical standards of teaching.
The way that people buy books has changed dramatically in the last twenty years, moving from mostly going out to bookshops to buying online in the comfort of their own homes, a trend that has only accelerated in the last couple of years. Because of this, we have taken the decision to follow the customers online, selling through ABE Books. Since we started at the beginning of 2019, we have sold books worldwide, regularly sending books to the United States, Canada, and Australia, and to many other parts of the world.
